Since last few decades there is a resurgence of interest in naturally coloured cotton. This has motivated the cotton breeders to develop eco-friendly naturally coloured cotton varieties. To support such endeavours a study was carried out to characterize some coloured and white cotton genotypes using morphological and molecular markers, study the transcript level of different flavonoids structural genes in brown green and white cotton fibres, find out differences in the fibre structure and obtain information on the inheritance of fibre colour, yield, and quality traits. The scatter plot analysis grouped 20 cotton genotypes into four clusters. White cotton genotypes, except Cute-98 grouped in Cluster I. The Clusters II and III had all the tetraploid coloured cotton genotypes while Cluster IV had two diploid cotton genotypes. Biplot analysis also showed negative association between fibre colour and fibre quality traits. Both SSR and EST-SSR markers revealed high level of genetic similarity among the cotton genotypes. Two separate dendrograms based on SSR and EST-SSR markers identified four main clusters for 20 cotton genotypes. Nineteen SSR and five EST-SSR markers were found to be associated with different fibre quality traits. Higher value of expected heterozygosity, effective multiplex ratio and marker index for SSR markers as compared to EST-SSR markers showed distinctive nature of SSR markers in revealing the difference among cotton genotypes. Transcriptome analysis of five flavonoid structural genes i.e., GhCHI, GhF3H, GhDFR, GhANS and GhANR revealed temporal expression of these genes during different fibre developmental stages in brown, green and white cotton fibres. The transcript level of all genes was significantly higher in brown then green and white cotton fibres. Scanning electron microscopic analysis at 500X magnification revealed significant improvement in morphological features of fibre of all coloured hybrids as compared to their parents. The surface structure of brown cotton fibres had rough appearance under SEM (4000X) than the other parental lines and coloured cotton hybrids. The additive, dominance and epistatic genetic effects appeared to be involved in the inheritance of various plant traits. Additive type of gene action was involved in the inheritance of boll weight, seed volume and fibre fineness in all crosses. Moderate estimates of narrow sense heritability for these traits confirmed the preponderance of additive gene effects in the inheritance of these traits. Chi-square analysis revealed that single incomplete dominant gene was responsible for the inheritance of fibre colour in naturally coloured cotton. In conclusion, the information on the extent of genetic diversity in cotton germplasm and association of molecular markers with fibre quality traits would be helpful in constructing the breeding populations with desired allelic combinations. The transcriptome analysis of flavonoids structural genes demonstrated that gene manipulation strategy to modulate the transcript level of these genes could improve the pigmentation of brown cotton fibres. Scanning electron microscopy of fibre structure appeared effective in identifying structural difference of fibres in coloured cotton. The comprehensive information on the genetic diversity, fibre structure and gene expression together with the estimates of phenotypic components of genetic variation, obtained from six breeding generation, provided convincing basis for the genetic improvement of coloured cotton cultivars.

براعظم افریقہ کی پہلی مسجد بھی قاہرہ میں تعمیر کی گئی تھی ۔یہ مسجد فاتح مصر حضرت عمرو بن العاص ؓ کے نام سے موسوم ہے ۔رومیوں کو شکست دے کر اس عظیم جرنیل نے حضرت محمد ﷺ کی وہ پیشین گوئی سچ ثابت کی جو آپؐ نے جنگ خندق میں کھدائی کے دوران اس بڑے پتھر کو توڑتے وقت دی تھی جس کا توڑنا صحابہ سے ممکن نہ تھا ۔خلیفہ وقت حضرت عمر ؓ نے حضرت عمر و بن العاص کو یہاں کا گورنر مقرر کیا ۔تقریباََ گیارہ ایکڑ کے احاطے پر مشتمل یہ مسجد افریقہ کی بڑی اور وسیع ترین مساجد میں شمار ہوتی ہے ۔ابتدا میں یہ ایک چھوٹی سے مسجد تھی جو اسلا م کی پہلی مسجد، مسجد قبا کی طرح کھجور کے درختوں پر تعمیر ہوئی تھی ۔ مگر اب یہ ایک عالی شان مسجد ہے جس کو دیکھنے دنیا بھر کے سیاح آتے ہیں ۔

Amongst other miracles of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), ISRAA and MAIRAAJ are one of the well-known miracles that have been discussed a lot in Sirat-ul-Nabi. This article, therefore, has brought under discussion the occur-rence of this miracle in the light of Qura’n and Ahadith in details.  Furthermore, it has also been discussed whether the occurrence of this miracle was physical or spiritual in its nature.  The concept of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan regarding this miracle has also been discussed; where he support his arguments with reference to some Ahadith, that the entire situation concerning the miracles was merely a dream and this miracle did not take place in physical form. According to him, this is against the law of nature. In this article the explicit concepts of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan have been rejected with the arguments given by the Majority of the Scholars and Muslim thinkers.

The Imperatives of Regional Security: A Case Study of Pakistan-China Relations in Post 9/11 Period

South Asian regional security has been comprehensively transformed in the post 9/11 period with intensification in traditional security threats along with the emergence of non-traditional security challenges. This study encompasses the emerging trends and the imperatives of regional security to investigate various aspects of strategic relations between Pakistan and China which existed in the past and explores whether their relations in the changed political theatre of the post 9/11 period have further enhanced or remained static. The study provides analysis of Pakistan-China relations by taking into account the new variables in post 9/11 era, which have acquired significance and bear on the implications of enhanced bilateral relationship, upon welfare of the people and conclusively for prosperity of the region. The study draws upon the vast literature and unpublished records to build an approach for examining the correlation between imperatives of regional security and enhancement of Pakistan-China strategic cooperation. In addition, the research endeavours to examine the role of China that it can offer to mediate the intricate state of regional affairs and provides the impetus to regional economies. Pakistan-China strategic partnership is crucial to maintain the balance of power in the region as it vouches regional security and stability. Indo-US strategic cooperation in defence and nuclear technology, support for India‟s inclusion into the United Nation Security Council as permanent member and US‟ stern approach of containing China‟s rise poses an aggravating threat to existing balance of power in the region. The study predicts that the future prospects of Pakistan and China‟s cooperation in promoting regional security, stability and cooperation are bright. Both the countries are committed to enhance cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels by forging a „community of shared destiny‟ with the objective of socio-economic development, for the people of both the countries as well as for the region. Therefore, promoting regional peace by meeting the imperatives of regional security such as eradication of extremism and terrorism, close cooperation for peace and stability in Afghanistan and making joint efforts for regional connectivity in South Asia would be in the common interest of both Pakistan and China, and the region at large.
