Three experiments were conducted at Horticulture Research Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, during autumn seasons in 2014-15 and repeated in 2015-16. The first experiment on planting depth (10, 15 and 20 cm), planting dates (October 01, 15 and 29) with mulch and without mulch (control) using potato as test crop was conducted at field conditions. Results indicated that maximum emergence (%), aerial stems plant-1, number of leaves plant-1, number of small size tubers plant-1, number of medium size tubers plant-1, number of large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), marketable tuber yield (t ha-1), and dry matter content (%) were recorded during 2015 as compared to 2014. Maximum physiological disorders (%) and survival (%) were noted during 2014-15. Delay sowing promoted number of small size tubers plant-1, while plant height, number of leaves plant-1, medium size tubers plant-1, large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), marketable tuber yield (t ha-1), dry matter content (%) and starch content (%) were higher at early sowing and decreased with delay in sowing. Delay sowing also increased mortality of plants. The effect of planting depth was also significant. Planting depth of 15 cm significantly increased emergence (%), number of aerial stems plant-1, plant height (cm), number of leaves plant-1, number of medium size tubers plant-1, large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), marketable tuber yield (t ha-1), while number of small size tubers plant-1 was lower in 15 cm depth. Mulching significantly increased emergence (%), number of aerial stems plant-1, plant height (cm), number of leaves plant-1, number of medium size tubers plant-1, large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), marketable tuber yield (t ha-1), dry matter content (%) and starch content but decreased in number of small size tubers plant-1. As for as interactions are concerned majority of the yield and quality parameters showed best results in early sown plants (October, 01) at a depth of 15 cm with mulching than late sown plants at 20 cm depth without mulching. The second experiment was “to study the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) (0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mML-1) on production and quality of autumn potato crop sown at different dates as mentioned above. Concerning sowing dates, early planting produced maximum plant height (cm), number of leaves plant-1, number of medium size tubers plant-1, number of large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), marketable tuber yield (t ha-1), survival (%), dry matter content (%) and starch content (%). Salicylic acid (SA) @ 1.5 mML-1 significantly increased number of leaves plant-1, number of medium size tubers plant-1, number of large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), marketable tuber yield (t ha-1), survival (%), dry matter content (%) and starch content (%), with decreased in number of small size tubers plant-1. Interaction between swing dates and SA revealed that early sowing with the application of 1.5 mML-1 SA have significantly increased all the yield and quality parameters.

مشکوٰۃ المصابیح پر شیخ عبدالحق محدث دہلوی کے کام کا جائزہ

"Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ" has a sound rank among the Hadith collections. Its importance can be gauged from the fact that it has been described and summarized by several scholars. The works of Sheikh Abdul Haq Muḥaddith Dehlavi over that is a great contribution and have a special place in the context of his Hadith services. He is one of the prominent muhaddithin of the Subcontinent. He was pioneer in teaching and disseminating Hadith knowledge in the subcontinent. Firstly, he described the Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ in the Persian language of that time, which gained immense popularity among the people and increased the taste for understanding Hadith. Secondly, He accumulated a treasure trove of mysteries and secrets in Arabic for the use of Researchers. The name of the Persian commentary is Ash‘atul Lam‘āt while the Arabic commentary is called Lam‘āt al-Tanqīh. They are more than one in usefulness, which has created a taste for reading and understanding Hadith among the people and Researchers. In the said article, an introduction and methodological study of the work done by Sheikh Abdul Haq on Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ will be presented.

Adaptive Optical Beam Control for Rangefinders and Delay Lines

In this thesis, the use of adaptive optics to exercise control over the fundamental TEM00 Gaussian laser beam is employed for applications in optical metrology and photonic signal processing. Split into two parts, this treatise explores the use of adaptive optics to introduce novel design solutions in both of these important areas of optics. Two novel designs of motionless Variable Optical Delay Lines (VODLs) are proposed with the respective proof-of-concept implementations. The first VODL design employs multiple Electronically Controlled Tunable Lenses (ECTLs) to vary the optical path of a beam between two fixed locations. The design provides a repeatable digitally controlled short variable signal delay as well as a small signal delay step size for short delay measurements. The second Variable Fiber-Optic Delay Line (VFODL) design imparts long variable delays by switching an input optical/RF signal between Single Mode Fiber (SMF) patch chords of different lengths through a pair of Electronically Controlled Tunable Lenses (ECTLs) resulting in polarization independent operation. Moreover, two laser rangefinder designs are also proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Various existing target ranging techniques are limited in terms of the dynamic range of operation and measurement resolution. These limitations arise as a result of a particular measurement methodology, the finite processing capability of the hardware components deployed within the sensor module and the medium through which the target is viewed. Generally, there is a trade-off between the sensor resolution and dynamic range. First, we propose a novel design of a triangulation-based optical rangefinder which improves both the sensor longitudinal resolution and its dynamic longitudinal range through adaptive electronic control of beam propagation parameters. We present the theory iii and working of the proposed sensor and clearly demonstrate a longitudinal range and resolution improvement. The second divergence-based displacement sensor design works by tuning the spot size of a Gaussian Beam from a Laser Source (LS) at the plane of the target. The beam spot size tuning is achieved through the use of an Electronically Controlled Tunable Lens (ECTL). Using a carefully aligned sensor assembly, the corresponding beam diameters are recorded at the plane of an imaging detector for different ECTL focal length settings. This dataset is then used to estimate the distance of the target from the ECTL. The proposed rangefinder is compact, requires minimal data acquisition and processing resulting in a fast response time compared to its predecessor. The estimation of target distance through a measurement dataset also ensures that the proposed method is robust to errors associated with estimates which are based on the use of a single measurement data point. Experimental results demonstrate an excellent agreement with theory.
