Salt stress is known to hamper steady state water flow which may reduce plant growth. This research was aimed to study the roles of leaf turgor, osmotic adjustment and cell wall elasticity under saline conditions which may reduce biomass production in Phragmites karka (a marsh grass). Plants were grown in 0, 100 and 300 mM NaCl and harvested on 3, 7, 15 and 30 days to observe periodic changes in growth and water relations. Leaf number, relative growth rate, and relative elongation rate were higher in the non-saline control than in the plants grown under saline conditions. Plants showed a rapid decline in leaf growth rate (7-15 days) in 300 mM NaCl compared to a delayed response (15-30 days) in 100 mM NaCl. Leaf water potential (ΨW) decreased with increases in salinity after 3rd day while osmotic potential decreased after 15th day. Low leaf turgor (Ψp) on the 3rd day indicated an initial phase of osmotic stress under saline conditions. Plants maintained higher Ψp in 0 and 100 mM than in 300 mM NaCl. Differences between mid-day and pre-dawn ΨW and water saturation deficit were higher in 300 mM NaCl than with other treatments. Water potential and hydraulic capacitance at turgor loss point decreased while bulk elastic modulus (Ɛ) increased in 300 mM NaCl. Maintenance of turgor and growth at 100 mM NaCl could be related to efficient osmotic adjustment (use of K+ and Cl-), higher water use efficiency, and lower Ɛ while poor growth at 300 mM NaCl may have been a consequence of low turgor, higher Ɛ and decreased cell hydraulic capacitance.

A Low-Cost Socio-Culturally Situated Mental Health Intervention for the Well-Being of Pakistani Young Women: A Reflective Narrative

The paper sets out to briefly discuss mental health challenges faced by Pakistani young women, and brings out an innovative solution through a multidisciplinary approach, i.e, socio-culturally situated low-cost digital intervention. The paper begins with an overview of mental health issues. It then sheds light on the scope of open education and innovation in Pakistan. Finally, through a reflective narrative approach, I have explored my personal journey of becoming a networked practitioner, and how an open educational website emerged to intersect the needs of Pakistani young women. Data is gathered from 137 reflective diary entries and analyzed through narrative analysis approach. Digital literacy and open networking practices have shaped my digital identity and allowed me to embrace open scholarship. Networking and collaboration have helped me filtering Open Educational Resources (OERs). Further, collaborative activities encouraged participants to become the co-producers of resource development. Overall, an adaptation of low-cost technology has potentially helped participants to reflect and embrace their personal identities.

The Impact of Ieds Certificate in Education Management Programme on Two Educational Officers

This exploratory study attempts to identify the impact of the Certificate in Educational Management (CEM) program at Institute for Educational Development (IED) on government educational system officers, in terms of their views, attitude and practices in order to identify some key features of individual professional development efforts. The fieldwork for the study was done in two government educational offices in Karachi with female educational officers (a DEO and an SDEO), who had undertaken the CEM program in 1998. The study focused on identifying what the officers were taught in the CEM program, and then trying to understand what they had learned and how it influenced their practices. The data for the study was collected from the DEO and SDEO through interviews, field observations, discussions and documents. The study seemed to show that the CEM program had a major impact on participants' attitudes and professional practices. This was most visible in a move from authoritarian towards a more caring, sharing and tolerant approach. The program has also had some impact on teachers' personality. The officers are people who seem to have become more confident, polite and tolerant, and it has removed their fear of English language.
