Fifty maize inbred lines collected from different sources were screened at seedling stage for drought tolerance in glasshouse. One drought tolerant and one sensitive line were selected and used to develop six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2). The generations were evaluated in glasshouse and field simultaneously under normal and drought conditions. Data on various seedling and morpho-physiological parameters were recorded and analyzed statistically. There was a decreasing trend for all the traits except anthesis-silking interval and leaf temperature under drought condition. Additive and dominance genetic effects were found for all seedling traits under normal condition except fresh and dry root weight which had additive genetic effects. Similarly additive and dominance gene action was involved for all seedling traitsunder drought condition except fresh root length and fresh and dry root weight, which were under additive genetic control. Additive genetic effects were present for the inheritance of days to silking, anthtesis-silking interval, ear leaf area, plant height, days to maturity, 100 grain weight and relative water content under normal condition, whereas days to tasseling, ear length, kernels per ear, grain yield per plant, cell membrane thermo-stability and leaf temperature showed the presence of both additive and dominance genetic effects. However under drought condition, days to tasseling, anthtesis-silking interval, ear leaf area, plant height, ear length, kernels per ear and cell membrane thermo-stability had both additive and dominance genetic effects, whereas additive genetic effects were observed for days to silking, days to maturity, 100 grain weight, grain yield per plant, relative water content and leaf temperature. Narrow sense heritability was high for most of the seedling and morphophysiological traits under both conditions, whereas genetic advance was maximum for grain yield per plant, ear leaf area and kernels per ear under water stress. Inbreeding depression was also maximum for grain yield per plant, ear leaf area and kernels per ear under water stress. Root/shoot ratio was positively and significantly correlated both on phenotypic and genotypic basis with fresh and dry root weight under both conditions. Grain yield had positive and significant association with days to maturity, ear length, number of kernels per ear, cell membrane thermo-stability and relative water content on phenotypic and genotypic basis under both normal and drought conditions, whereas negative and significant phenotypic correlations of grain yield were found with leaf temperature under both conditions. Grain yield of maize may be enhanced by improving ear length, kernels per ear, cell membrane thermo-stability and relative water content.

For the development of the interior Nation tolerance, peace, prosperity, ethical and spiritual development is very necessary. Islam is the religion of peace and safety. There is no scope for oppression and aggression in Islam. In Islam sustainable development is a process in which real income and per capita income of country increase as well as self-esteem, freedom of action and religious activity also increase. People should make best use of country’s means of production to create better conditions than the past. A great harden in society’s development is religious prejudice. Religious tolerance means to treat the follower of other religious without hurting their feeling and without any mistreatment just because of their views. We should not hate other religious and their follower although we do not agree with their philosophies and views. We should accept and fulfil their rights as human beings which God has bestowed with high status. We can understand breadth and depth of tolerance by the saying of Holy Prophet. In twenty-one century Europe ideas of tolerances have different meaning than Islam. This paper provides a literature review on this subject in the light of Holy Quran and Seerah of Holy Prophet.

The Headteacher’S Role in Motivating Teachers to Work in a Secondary School Facing Adverse Circumstances

The teachers in public sector school, in most of the developing countries, are working in challenging circumstances in terms of lack of physical resources. In Pakistan, the situation is not different. In most of the public schools in Pakistan, the teachers are confronted with lack of physical resources which has contributed to a large extent in their demotivation towards their work. Recent studies also point out that it is only the teachers' working context which motivates or demotivates them. The research also recommends for the exploration of factors within the school context, which can contribute to teacher motivation. Research assumes that when teachers' work context is conducive for their motivation, then they are motivated. Literature considers that the head teacher can create an environment in the school through his/her influential role, which motivates teachers towards their work. This small scale qualitative case study was conducted for exploring the role of the head teacher in motivating teachers to work in a school facing adverse circumstances. The study had four research participants that is, the head teacher and three teachers. The study was conducted in a secondary school run by a Trust, with little or no physical resources, yet the teachers were found to be motivated. The head teacher was found motivated towards making the school environment appealing for the teachers. The school environment comprised a clear vision, both for the whole school and individual teachers. The vision of the school was well-conveyed to the teachers by the head teacher, who encouraged the teachers to set their individual goals. The head teacher’s approach heartened teachers to work collaboratively towards the achievement of their goals. He also involved teachers in decision making and empowered them as autonomous professionals. He developed friendly relationships with the teachers and appreciated their efforts. The study found the lack of physical resources as a big challenge for the head teacher in motivating teachers. However, the head teacher’s role of standing by the teachers in any kind of situation and leading by setting a personal example enable him to deal with these challenges and this also made the teachers stand by him in any kind of situation.
