This dissertation study aims to the investigation of new biosorbent from locally available low cost agriculture material, rice husk, for scavenging of heavy metals especially precious and rare earth metals. Rice husk was treated with NaOH solution to check the effect of modification on metal ions adsorption. Rice husks treated and virgin were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X- Ray (EDX) and Brunner EmmetTeller (BET) techniques. The rice husk (RH) & NaOH treated rice husk (TRH) were characterized by various physico-chemical methods like porosity, bulk density, ash, volatile and moisture contents, pHPZC, pH and methylene blue surface area measurements. The determined surface area of RH was 47.91 and TRH was 272.06 m2 g−1 by methylene blue method whereas BET surface area was 1.03 for RH and 2.53 m2g−1 for TRH. From the comparison of FTIR spectra of RH and TRH and metals loaded adsorbent, it was found that metals ions mostly attached with the oxygen and silicon containing functional groupsThus OH, −COOH, O CH3 and Si−O−Si, functional groups play vital role in the adsorptive removal of heavy metals ions from aqueous solutions. SEM analysis showed that RH and TRH possess rough and porous structures and the morphological difference between them revealed that the NaOH treatment created large and wide pores making TRH more rough and porous material. The pore size for untreated rice husk was 100-108 nm and for treated rice husk was 355.57 to 1220 nm confirming macro porous structure of the adsorbent. SEM exhibited the morphological changes on the adsorbent surface after metal ions adsorption and were confirmed by EDX analysis by the presences of these metal ions on the adsorbent surface. Various physico-chemical parameters such as pH, mineral acid concentrations (HNO3, HCl, H2SO4 and HClO4), amount of adsorbent, contact time, initial metal ions concentration and temperature have been optimized for maximum removal of metal ions from aqueous media by rice husk employing batch mode. The removal of metal ions were quantitative within a short contact time of 10 - 25 minutes for all metal ions (Ag, Cs, Cu, Co, Ni, Th, La and Ce). Maximum adsorption of silver and cerium was observed in 1 × 10-2 mol L-1 of nitric acid solution whereas maximum adsorption in case of thorium, nickel, lanthanum and caesium was found in 1 × 10-2 mol L-1 nitric acid solution. The adsorption data obtained by the variation of equilibrium time was applied to various kinetic models. Pseudo second order was the best fitted kinetic model for the adsorption of precious and rare earth metal ions. Mechanism of metal ions uptake was verified by applying intra-particle, liquid film and Elovich models. The adsorption data of metal ions on rice husk obeyed the Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm equations. Adsorption capacities of rice husk for all these metal ions were calculated form their linear and nonlinear forms. Regression coefficient ‗R2‘ and Chi square test ‗χ2‘ were used as the criteria for the best fit of adsorption isotherm models. The adsorption capacities of the rice husk obtained by the Freundlich isotherm were compared with the reported adsorption capacities of various adsorbents and rice husk was found better adsorbent for the removal of these metal ions from aqueous media. The sorption free energies determined by D-R isotherm confirmed chemisorption type of adsorption of metal ions on rice husk having numerical values in a range of 10.16 – 22.43 kJ mol−1 for the metal ions in this study. The adsorption processes were found to be endothermic in nature with positive values of ∆H in a range of 3 839 – 31.016 kJ mol−1 and ∆S values (16 839 – 115.764 J mol−1 K−1) confirmed increase in randomness at the solid-solution interface by the fixation of metal ions on the rice husk. The increased numerical values of ∆G with rise in temperature indicates that the adsorption process of metal ions ( Cu, Co, Ag, Ni, Cs, Th, La and Ce) on rice husk becomes more favourable at higher temperatures. Sticking probabilities and activation energies of all metal ions system favour the chemisorption nature of interactions with rice husk. The adsorption of metal ions occurs in the presence of a variety of anions and cations. Regeneration of adsorbent and recovery of metal ions were performed by using different concentrations of nitric acid. The developed procedures were successfully applied to the spiked tap water samples by removing the metal ions under optimized conditions. The maximum metal ions removal was obtained in two steps under optimized conditions. On the basis of this study it was concluded that abundantly and locally available inexpensive rice husk has great potential to be utilized for the removal of precious and rare earth metal ions from bulk aqueous solutions for the safe disposal of industrial as well as radioactive effluents and will provide an alternative solution to minimize environmental damages caused by these metal ions.

In the contemporary academia, importance of journals is an established fact. Not only does the traditional academia discourse, but also modern discipline appears due to such endeavor of such traditions of journal. An editor is the key person who lightens the quality of writing. All฀mah Shibl฀ Nu‘m฀n฀ (1857-1914) was not only an historian, writer, scholar and a great expert in the field of journals. He was the very first editor of various journals in the sub-continent. He had great vision in arrangement multiple discourses in the journals, at the same time his expertise in editorship can be explored. In his opinion a good editor needs to observe these characteristics. He should establish good relationship with scholars to achieve good targets of excellent writings. He should appoint co-editors for training and take keen interest in the additional responsibilities. He should select important as well as relevant articles and ensure material for the Journal in advance. He should also have a curious look on the contemporary journals to organize, review on latest books and to exploit various available sources to propagate journals. Shibl฀ can be called a modern vehicle of expression. He made substantial contribution in enhancing the quality of the journals and promoting journals material for a wide readership. He trained novice graduates for professional editorship for the journals. Here is an effort to highlight Shibl฀’s letters as golden principle of writing.

Implications of the Socio-Cultural Milieu of the Society on Male Reproductive Health Behaviour in Punjab-Pakistan

Introduction: In Pakistan, male involvement in reproductive health started long before the concept of a holistic approach emerged from ICPD in 1994. Men are far behind the knowledge about contraceptives, authority of decisions making, religiosity, exposure of media, health attitude, physical cost, Knowledge of HIV/STDs, drugs and family planning services. These circumstances have damaging-effect on men''s reproductive health as well. The poor reproductive health of men in the entire Pakistan has been reported in many studies. The different national and international agencies have shown a great concern on this alarming situation of men''s deteriorating reproductive health status. They have recommended to investigate the men reproductive health status in relation to different aspects. In this context the main objectives of this study is to identify and analyze different types of socio-cultural characteristics, affect the attitudes, lack of awareness of respondents toward reproductive health behaviour were examioned in Punjab-Pakistan. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted in 3-districts of Punjab province. One tehsils from each district selected randomly and sample of 272 men from Tehsil-1 i.e. Rawalpindi, 197 from Tehsil-2 i.e. Bahawalpur and 131 from Tehsil-3 i.e. Toba Tek Singh. From each Tehsil equal no. of respondents was selected from rural and urban areas by random sampling technique to explore the research objectives. In this way the total sample size will be 600. 300 from rural and 300 from urban areas. A well-structured questionnaire consisting of open ended and close ended questions has been prepared in the light of research objectives. Pre-testing was also in the study plan to examine the work-ability of questionnaire and to know the sensitive issues which can be tackled intelligently. Results: Bi-variate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the relationship between different terms MRHB. The results regarding age, age at marriage, duration of marriage, communication with wife, fertility preference, discussion about reproductive health problems, general health status, Knowledge about Contraceptive, Contraceptive use behaviour, knowledge about HIV/STDs of the respondents and their reproductive health behaviour were having there strong relationship and communication of affairs with wife having no relation and in multivariate analysis were used to build model and respondents age at marriage, duration of marriage, education, income, communication with wives, drugs using were highly significant and age of the respondent, communication of affairs, ideal number of children in a family were non-significant with MRHB.. The value of adjusting R 2 is 0.660 and it indicates that about 66% variation in the dependent variable is explained by knowledge about contraceptive and use of contraceptive, communication with wives, drug use, reproductive health problems, general health, knowledge about HIV, Media exposure. Recommendations: Based on the research findings it is suggested that a general acceptance of contraceptive use, men along with women should be include in the target group as most of the decisions regarding family planning and contraception necessitate prior approval of male partners. Men shall be educate to give women all due rights especially their reproductive rights and involve them in reproductive and contraceptive decision making. Awareness should be created amongst male to give their women freedom of expression and let them join paid jobs, thereby making the family economically prosperous. Perceptions of the respondents were clear about family planning, awareness should be created against religious misconceptions and make it more convenient for the illiterates in the form of a packages deal. It would be more appropriate to tackle family planning campaign in the light of baby care and mother health along with strongly advocating improvement of economic conditions of the family. All income groups should be convinced to use contraceptives as an effective tool for family planning, more stress should be given on low and medium income groups, discourage the preferential gender treatment and involved their wives in all family matters. Primary health center (PHC) programs must be geared to meet men’s needs. Communication between spouses about RH should be developed through awareness. PHC service providers are mostly female, males should be inducted.
