The Indian red jungle fowl (IRJF; Gallus gallus murghi) native to South-Asia is facing threats in its natural habitat and needs immediate conservation employing ex-situ and in-situ approaches. For ex-situ, in vitro conservation of IRJF, semen banking is one of the potential techniques that require an extender with appropriate cryoprotectants having adequate retrieval capacity for functional spermatozoa. Therefore, study was designed to evaluate semen production capacity (semen characteristics, timing, frequency of collection and seasonal changes), identification of efficient extender, cryo-damage estimation, permeable (glycerol, DMA, DMSO and DMF) for short and long term storage of semen and the use of non-permeable cryoprotectants (PVP and egg yolk) and fertility outcomes for ex situ in vitro conservation of IRJF germplasm. Semen was collected from eight male birds of IRJF (housed at main campus PMAS-AAUR) in a graduated plastic tube through abdominal massage and transferred to the laboratory for assessment of semen volume, initial motility and concentration. The ejaculates having at least 60% motility were processed for further experimentation. The qualifying ejaculates were studied for motility, volume, concentration, plasma membrane integrity, viability and acrosomal integrity of spermatozoa. Semen production in IRJF was quite low compared to domestic fowl but could be collected safely on daily basis preferentially in the evening. A number of diluents (Beltsville poultry, turkey, Lake, EK, Tselutin poultry and chicken semen extender) were tested against their efficacy to preserve IJRF spermatozoa in liquid (5ºC) and frozen state (LN2; -196ºC). The turkey semen extender was found superior compared to all xxvii 4 4 experimental extenders for storage in liquid and frozen state showing remarkably higher fertility rate. Cryopreservation with 11% glycerol caused maximum loss to motility (50%) followed by plasma membrane integrity (45%), viability (25%) and minimal to acrosomal integrity (20%). Glycerol optimization (11, 15 and 20%) study demonstrated the superiority (P < 0.05) of 20% glycerol in freezing for cryopreservability and fertility after artificial insemination. Various levels of DMA, DMSO, DMF and PVP (4, 6, 8, and 10%) were evaluated; 6% DMA, 8% DMSO, 8% DMF and 6% PVP maintained higher (P < 0.05) semen quality and fertility after artificial insemination compared to control treatment where spermatozoa were exposed to 20% glycerol. Among four levels of egg yolk (10, 15, 20 and 25%) evaluated; 15% egg yolk was superior (P < 0.05) for semen quality and fertility compared to the control. It is concluded that IJRF semen with maximum efficiency can be collected once in a day either in the morning or evening. The germplasm of IJRF can be conserved in liquid (for two days) and in frozen state (for indefinite period) using cryopreservation protocol based on DMA or DMF or DMSO or PVP and egg yolk can be used efficiently in artificial breeding program for conservation.

Laws of Inheritance in Islam and Hinduism: A Comparative Study

Laws of inheritance and succession exist since time immemorial in every human society. The estate of the deceased person is distributed amongst his/her legal heirs according to the laws of inheritance. Based on religions i.e. Islam and Hinduism-two different societies exist in the Indo-Pak sub-continent, having different frames of rules regarding socio-religious life. Coupled with a long history of closeness and co-existence, have deep religio-moral and socio-cultural diffusions and infusions with one another. The same impact permeates the laws of inheritance as well. This paper is an analysis of this permeation by focusing on the points of comparison and contrast in the light of the Holy Qur’ān, Sunn’ah and the sacred books of Hindūism.

Maintaining Multiple Identities: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of South Asian Immigrant Fiction

Maintaining Multiple Identities: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of South Asian Immigrant Fiction South Asian immigrants on being in a foreign land, including Britain and the USA, have to make many adjustments in their lifestyles to live a less frictional and more resourceful life. Yet they cannot completely delink themselves from their original culture in which they or their parents are brought up. This results in their developing complex and multiple identities which draw force partially from their origin as well as their host culture. Fiction writings, particularly by Diaspora writers, bring out these conflicts/issues more clearly than any other means as authors masquerade behind the veils of their respective protagonists whom they give their languages, origins, ethnicities, biographical similarities, particularly identity dilemmas and crises. This study aims to investigate how immigrants of various South Asian origins and generations develop, maintain and/or negotiate the multiple aspects of their identities when they live in an entirely different host culture. With this aim in mind, the lives of characters in selected works of South Asian Immigrant Fiction have been analyzed using Bakhtin's framework of Novelistic Discourse for detecting the identity issues confronted by the immigrants as it particularly focuses on the dialogical relationship between the author and his/her characters, their languages and worldviews in the novelistic discourse. The works chosen centre around the issues of maintenance and negotiation of identities of various characters in the South Asian Immigrant Fiction in English. The ideology and identity of the authors is traced through their language use and portrayal of characters. Bakhtin's framework is aided by Sociolinguistic tools as well as Literary Close Reading, Discourse Analysis and Social Anthropology. The study reveals that the necessity of developing multiple, contradictory and compromised identities are not without their windfalls and pitfalls though; it is helpful in immigrants' assimilation and naturalization in the host culture, yet at the cost of losing a great part of their original culture, language and heritage. Grown up in their native countries, the first generation parents are able to maintain multiple identities pretty successfully by posing a 'fake' identity. In contrast, the subsequent generations (in their developmental stages) have to face many peculiar dilemmas which often result in distancing/breaking off from their parents. The biggest challenge that poses the latter is striking a balance between individualism and family unity, personal freedom and family life, adjustment in the mainstream and expectations of home and, liberty and social conservatism.
