Metamaterials (MTM) are composite materials that provide some unique characteristics which are not available by nature. But there is one major drawback or limitation of MTM which is its fixed and narrow working frequency region. To overcome this limitation, there are few techniques, presented in this thesis, to vary the working frequency band of MTM. As MTM are artificial materials, so there are various resonators available in literature, presented for MTM. In this thesis, three resonators, split ring resonator (SRR), S-shaped resonator (SSR) and single side paired S-ring resonator (SSPSRR) have been chosen from literature and different techniques to shift their resonant frequencies are presented. For SRR, a tunable case i.e., inner ring shorted split ring resonator (IRS-SRR) is pre- sented in this thesis. The analytical expression of the effective permeability of IRS-SRR is calculated and for the verification of the analytical work, the experimental results are also included in this thesis. The analytical expression for the effective permeability of SSR is also presented in this thesis. Two tunable or modified cases of SSR, i.e., bottom metallic strips shorted S-shaped resonator (BSSR) and top-bottom metallic strips shorted S-shaped resonator (TBSSR) are presented in this thesis. The analytical expressions of the effective permeabilities of BSSR and TBSSR are also calculated. For verification of the analytical work of SSR, BSSR and TBSSR, experimental results are included in this thesis. Similar to SSR, the analytical expression of the effective permeability of SSPSRR is presented in this thesis and the experimental results are also included to verify the analytical work. Two tunable cases of SSPSRR, i.e., bottom metallic strips shorted single side paired S- ring resonator (B-SSPSRR) and top-bottom metallic strips shorted single side paired S-ring resonator (TB-SSPSRR), are also presented in this thesis along with experimental results. Other than the tunable cases of various resonators, rotation of resonators is presented in this thesis as a technique to vary the working frequency of MTM. This technique has been applied on SSR, SSPSRR and their respective tunable cases in this thesis and the vexperimental results are presented for justification of this technique. There are number of devices (made using MTM), are available in literature. All these devices can be upgraded to work as tunable devices using the techniques presented in this thesis.

101. Al-Qari’ah/The Calamity

101. Al-Qari’ah/The Calamity

I/We begin by the Blessed Name of Allah

The Immensely Merciful to all, The Infinitely Compassionate to everyone.

101:01
a. The Calamity!

101:02
a. What will be The Calamity?

101:03
a. And what may enable you to comprehend The Calamity?

101:04
a. The Calamity is going to happen at the dreadful Time when human beings will seem like moths scattered all around in confusion,

101:05
a. and the mountains will be like tufts of wool.

101:06
a. As for the one whose scales of true faith and deeds and dealings of righteousness will be heavier in weight,

101:07
a. he will be in a life, pleasing - full of joy and contentment.

101:08
a. But as for the one whose scales of true faith and deeds and dealings of righteousness will be lighter in weight,

101:09
a. his mother will be the womb of the bottomless Pit.

101:10
a. And what may enable you to comprehend what that Pit is?

101:11
a. It will be a Fire blazing fiercely!

Portrayal of Positive Psychological Capital in Quran

The present study aims at exploring positive psychological capital in the verses of Qur’an. Positive psychology is the latest advancement in the field of psychology which focuses on improving the well-being of society. Positive psychological capital refers to the combination of overall qualities of positive psychology that contributes to the well-being and mental health. The present study is based on the content analysis of the verses of Qur’an. Content analysis comprises of three steps including identifying the categories or themes, dividing the information into units or parts and finally rating all the themes in all units. In the first step the researchers identified 41 themes from Qur’an by using committee approach and reading the verses between the lines. All these categories were identified by keeping in view the underlying themes of positive psychology. In the second step 30 units were devised from Qur’an by considering each Part as a single unit. The categories included behavior modification, belief in divine help, brotherhood, bravery, contentment, civility, credibility, encouragement of virtue, emotional regulation, excellence, forgiveness, generosity, gratitude, honesty, hopefulness, humility, justice, knowledge, lawful spending, learning, meaningfulness, mindfulness, moderation, obedience, patience, peace, determination, positivity, prosperity, repentance, resilience, reward, self-actualization, self-awareness, self-control, sincerity, social leadership, truthfulness, trust, and wisdom. Results suggest that the most prominent category in Qur’an is the reward. Validity of the study was maintained through the selection of the themes with the help of committee approach. Reliability of the scoring system was maintained through partial inter-rater reliability. Overall the present research has many implications in the positive psychology of religion.

Purification and Characterization of Proteins Important for Homologous Recombination in Eukaryotes

Successful repair of DNA double strand breaks is crucial; failure of which can lead to tumourigenesis including breast/ovarian cancer. BRCA2 (breast cancer susceptibility protein type 2) and RAD51 from different specie interact in a process called homologous recombination (HR) during the repair of such kind of insults to DNA. BRCA2 being a large protein molecule has different sites of interaction for other proteins like DMC1 (disruption of meiotic control 1). In the present study, we have purified a distinct region in human BRCA2 close to DMC1 binding site which has been shown to undergo CDK (cyclin dependent kinase) based phosphorylation in our kinase assays. Characterization involving dynamic light scattering, limited proteolysis and circular dichroism spectroscopy techniques revealed this region to be mostly disordered. We have also attempted the successful purification of DMC1 (different from the previous method of its purification) employing C-terminus of DMC1 as binding partner for increased solubility. Further studies included the characterization of Trypanosoma brucei BRC repeats (TbBRC) and Rad51 interaction. We observed no interaction of Trypanosoma brucei Rad51 (TbRad51) with its BRC repeats upto 7 BRC repeats based on our in vitro pull down assays. The comparison of human RAD51 and TbRad51 structures highlighted critical differences of residues at hydrophobic cavities for the binding of phenylalanine from BRC repeat. We predicted that TbBRC repeats, collectively, might have WD-40 β-propeller structure. The purification of Trypanosoma brucei 7 BRC repeats rendered this protein highly soluble and stable based on circular dichroism spectroscopy which also revealed the protein having poly-proline structure, a characteristic of unordered proteins. Moreover, we have predicted multiple phosphorylation sites in TbRad51 and compared them with other eukaryotic Rad51 orthologues to get insights into a possible regulatory mechanism for Rad51.
