Drought stress at all stages affects physiological and morphological characteristics important for wheat growth and development. Two types of population, i.e., International Triticeae Mapping Initiative (ITMI) and Synthetic derivatives (SYN-DER) were utilized to study the effects of drought stress in wheat. 209 recombinant inbred lines of ITMI, derived from synthetic wheat (W7984) x Opata, were evaluated at seedling stage for quantitative trait loci (QTL) identification. Our results indicated moderate to high broad sense heritability (H) among the RILs population with significant differences (p<0.01) revealed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). A high-density linkage map was constructed with 2639 genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) markers that covered 5047 cM with an average marker density of 1.9 cM/marker. 16 QTLs were identified by composite interval mapping (CIM), distributed over nine chromosomes, out of which 10 QTLs were identified under water-limited (WL) conditions and 6 were identified under well-watered (WW) conditions with 4 to 59% of the phenotypic variance. In addition, 216 accessions of synthetic wheat germplasm (SYN-DER) were evaluated using 124 Kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP) functional assays on 87 functional genes. KASP genotyping results indicated that beneficial alleles for genes underpinning flowering time (Ppd-D1 and Vrn D3), thousand-grain weight (TGW) (TaCKX-D1, TaTGW6-A1, TaSus1-7B and TaCwi D1), water-soluble carbohydrates (TaSST-A1), yellow-pigment content (Psy-B1 and Zds D1), and root lesion nematodes (Rlnn1) were fixed in diversity panel with frequency ranging from 96.4-100%. The association analysis of functional genes with agronomic phenotypes in WW and WL conditions revealed that 21 marker-trait associations (MTAs) were consistently associated with agronomic traits in both conditions. Vrn-A1, Rht-D1, and xiv Ppd-B1 exhibited confounding effect on several agronomic traits including plant height, TGW and grain yield in both WW and WL conditions. The accumulation of favorable alleles for grain size and weight genes additively enhanced TGW in diversity panel. CWI gene has a conserved WECPDF domain. The result showed that 123 accessions have Hap 4A-C haplotype at TaCwi-A1, which is significantly associated with TGW and other agronomic traits under both WW and WL conditions. The non-synonymous substitutions observed in TaCwi-B1 in the conserved domain (WECPDF) were Glu372Lys, Glu372Gly, Pro374Gln, Asp375Thr, while Phe376Leu, Tyr377Thr, Val379Cys variants. In silico analysis revealed that these point mutations were sequentially and structurally influencing the biological function of the TaCwi-B1 protein.

Pak-US Strategic Partnership in the War on Terror to Curb Militant Bloodbath

Pakistan’s involvement in the US war on terrorism was a tragic decision. No option was left for the ruling elite of Pakistan except to join the global war on terrorism and to take a U-turn from the support of Taliban’s regime in Afghanistan which was duly recognized by Pakistan’s government in 1996. It was expected by the policy-makers of the US that the alliance with Pakistan would provide extraordinary strength in combating the Al-Qaeda and other affiliated conglomerates in Afghanistan as well as in borderland area. However, after fifteen years of war, the alliance has enfeebled despite their mutual understanding regarding the objectives envisaged in the Strategic Partnership. The war on terrorism has now been escalated from Afghanistan to Pakistan and it has provided space to religious extremism, militancy, intolerance, ethnic division and sectarianism. There is no denial to the fact that religious extremism and terrorism are common threat and have damaged both the countries yet Pakistan has sacrificed more than the US in terms of human and material loss. Nevertheless, blame game and trust deficit is on the rise from both sides. This article focuses first on the joint ventures that the US and Pakistan mutually initiated to curb militant bloodbath in Afghanistan as well as in the border region. Secondly, it will explore factors responsible for increasing trust deficit between the partners. The study will not only provide deep understanding about the prevailing issues between Pakistan and the US but will also give true pictures to streamline the methodology for negotiating with each other in  future.

Reducing the Incidence of Workplace Bullying and Mitigating its Impact on Employee Performance

Motivating work environment enhances performance of human resources whereas workplace hurdles, stressors and hazards result in a decline in their performance. Workplace bullying is a major workplace hazard that results in low employee performance. Hence, its incidence must be controlled and impact on employee performance must be mitigated. The current study was conducted to analyze the workplace bullying phenomenon, reduce its incidence by implementing antibullying interventions and mitigating its impact on employee performance by enhancing the level of emotional intelligence of the victims through emotional intelligence training interventions in health care sector of Pakistan. This study was carried in three stages: (i) Pretest stage, (ii) Treatment of Bully Group and Victim Group, (iii) posttest stage. In Pretest Stage, bullying incidence was reported and groups of bullies and victims were identified. There were 25 bullies who were lacking personality trait of agreeableness and 126 victims who had personality trait of agreeableness. In Stage 2: Treatment of Bully Group, anti-bullying interventions developed through The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to change bullies’ behavior were applied to 22 bullies who agreed to be the part of TTM anti-bullying interventions. Moreover, in Stage 2: Treatment of Victim Group was carried out where employee performance and emotional intelligence level of 101 identified victims were assessed. By providing an informed consent, 36 victims with low level of emotional intelligence became the part of EI training interventions. In stage 3: posttest data was collected and analyzed. Results of Wilcoxon Signed Ranked test revealed significant decrease in bullying incidence and paired sample T-Test showed significant increase in emotional intelligence. Results of moderation analysis revealed that EI had significantly moderated relationship between workplace bullying and employee performance. Significant decrease in negative effect of workplace bullying incidence on employee performance was found when the level of emotional intelligence was enhanced. Similar results were reported in both pre and post-EI-interventions implementation stages. However, negative effect in post-EI-interventions implementation stage was relatively lower as a resultant higher level of emotional intelligence. Current study also discussed limitations or directions for future research and various important implications for theory, research and practice.
