Contribution of adaptive filters in the evolution of modern communications is remarkable. The logic of adaptive filtering establishes a significant part in the tool-set of statistical signal processing. For the problem of adaptive estimation, computational cost, convergence rate, steady-state error, stability and generalization are considered to be the main challenges. In this work several novel adaptive algorithms are developed to address these challenges. This work focus on two different types of environments, namely single-agent environments and multi-agent environments. In singleagent environments, data arrives at a single node for the estimation of a parameter of interest. For such environments we propose a novel idea of q-calculus based adaptive analysis. The qgradient is an extension of the classical gradient vector based on the concept of Jackson’s derivative. The q-derivative takes larger steps in the search direction as it evaluates the secant of the cost function rather than the tangent (as in the case of a conventional derivative). Motivated by this, in this work we developed several algorithms/ideas in which we addressed the short comings of the standard least mean square (LMS) and its variants by using q-calculus, such as, the q-least mean square (q-LMS) algorithm, in which we minimize the LMS cost function by employing the concept of q-derivative instead of the conventional derivative, the q-normalized least mean square (qNLMS), the two-dimensional q-least mean square (2D-qLMS) algorithm and the q-LMS for tracking a non-stationary channel. Consequently, several new explicit closed-form expressions for the meansquare-error (MSE) behavior are derived for the transient and steady-state analysis. On the other hand multi-agent signal processing has attract a number of researchers owing to better statistical inference in wireless networks and is therefore effectively utilized in many applications such as wireless sensor networks, smart grids etc. In multi-agent environments, data arrives at multiple nodes that are distributed over a geographical area and have a common task of estimation of a desired parameter. There are two major estimation techniques used for distributed environments: (1) centralized estimation, and (2) decentralized estimation. In centralized estimation, all the estimations take place at a single processor by sharing data from each node at a centralized unit. Such an estimation requires powerful processor along with massive amount of communication and power. To overcome these problems a decentralized estimation solution is proposed in literature, in which each node has its local estimate which is shared with the neighbors in an explicit manner (such as incremental, diffusion etc). Decentralized estimation techniques suffer from: (1) link failure problem, (2) instability issues, and (3) computational cost (particularly in the context of state-space estimation models). To deal with these problems, a number of innovative methodologies are proposed. Firstly a convex combination-based incremental least mean square (LMS) algorithm is proposed to overcome the problems of link failure between the nodes and instability in case local divergence in incremental mode of cooperation. The proposed algorithm is developed by employing convex combination of two filters. The adaptation of one filter is based on the estimate of adjacent node (incremental type), while the adaptation of the other is based on the estimate of the current local node at the previous time instant. These two filters are then fused together by using a suitable mixing parameter. Secondly to minimize the steady-state error, an optimum error non-linearity based incremental mode of cooperation is proposed. Thirdly, to reduce the computational cost for state-space estimation in distributed environments, a state-space least mean square algorithm for diffusion mode of cooperation is proposed. The proposed algorithm minimizes the computational complexity at each node which intern provides a significant advantage in terms of computational cost of the overall network and hence, can improve the response time of the network. Both the convergence in the mean and the mean square analysis of the proposed algorithm are performed and the transient and steady-state behavior of the proposed algorithm is analyzed.

مدت سے اردو کا گلشن صیادوں اور گل چینوں کے نرغے میں ہے، بادِ حوادث بھی اس میں خاک اڑا کر اسے ویرانے میں تبدیل کرنے کے درپے ہے، اردو کے پرانے بادہ کش اٹھتے جارہے ہیں۔ ابھی مجروح ۱؂ سلطان پوری کے غم میں آنسو تھمے نہیں تھے کہ یکم اگست کو اردو کا بہت ممتاز اور قدر آور شخص بین الاقوامی شہرت کا حامل انقلابی شاعر، وسیع النظر ادیب و نقاد، اچھا مقرر و خطیب اور ترقی پسند تحریک کا میرکارواں، سید علی سردار جعفری بھی چل بسا۔ جس کے جانے سے اردو کی دلکش اور رنگارنگ گنگاجمنی تہذیب کا خاتمہ ہوگیا اور اردو دنیا میں ویرانی اور تاریکی چھاگئی، اردو والے بے قرار ہوکر کہہ رہے ہیں:

جناب سید علی سردار جعفری کے بزرگ ریاست بلرام پور میں اونچے عہدوں پر فائز تھے۔ اس لئے ان کا خاندان آگرہ سے بلرام پور چلا آیاتھا۔ یہیں نومبر ۱۹۱۳؁ء میں سردار کی ولادت ہوئی اور اعلیٰ تعلیم علی گڑھ مسلم یونیورسٹی میں ہوئی، وہ طلبہ کے لیڈر بھی رہے اس وقت ملک میں قومی اور سیاسی سرگرمیاں عروج پر تھیں، ہر طرف سرفروشان وطن نے انگریزوں کے خلاف پرچم بغاوت بلند کر رکھا تھا اور پورا ملک انقلاب کے نعروں اور آزادی کے ترانوں سے گونج رہا تھا۔ سردار بھی اقبال سہیل کا یہ رجز پڑھتے ہوئے، آزادی کے دیوانوں کے لشکر میں جاملے۔

The ultimate goal of an education system is to produce a better citizen and create a better society. In this regard, it is the responsibility of state to design its education system on sound grounds. In Pakistan, there is dual education system, modern education system and traditional Madrasah system. Modern education system prepares its students on the bases of western education pattern while Maddris develop their students in the light of their own respective schools of thought. Thus, the two educational systems are producing two different categories of graduates, leading to imbalance and intodlerance in the society. To bridge this gap between the two systems and to make the education system harmonious, the government has passed “Pakistan Madrasa ‘h Education Board Ordinance ". Three model Maddris have been set up as a pilot project in Karachi and Sakkar for boys and in Islamabadfor girls. It was supposed to be extended in other cities as well but due to the reservations of Ulamd ' and their bitter opposition, the process did not get due attention among the public. In this paper, the authors will try to bring out the Ulamd’s reservations on "Pakistan Madrasah Education Board” in order to bringforth the policy suggestionsfor the betterment of the program.

Role of Continuous Professional Development Conducted by Quaid-E-Azam Academy for Educational Development in Improving Professional Skills of Secondary Level Teachers

The teachers are dynamic force of education system. Policy makers, district and school leaders, parents, all are increasingly concerned about the improvement of the quality of education. Effectiveness in learning and sound foundation of an educated society can be possible by the committed role of teachers. So, availability of effective teachers in making an efficient education system is a prerequisite. Teachers? education and training programs are being offered by different institutions in Pakistan. The purpose of these trainings is to develop teachers who are professionally competent. Quaid-e-Azam Academy for Education Development provides in-service training for public sector school teachers to enhance their professional competence. This study was conducted to evaluate the impacts of continuous professional development programs conducted by Quaid-e-Azam Academy for Educational Development (QAED) on the professional skills of secondary school teachers. The population of the study comprised of secondary classes? teachers of high schools of district Gujranwala. A sample of 200 teachers, 150 teachers for questionnaire (75 trained and 75 untrained) and 50 teachers for observation (25 trained and 25 untrained), was selected from government high schools through convenient sampling techniques. Twenty-five head teachers were also selected for questionnaire through convenience sampling techniques from government high schools. Data was collected through personal observation and questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as means and inferential statistics such as Chi Square were used to describe the data. It was concluded that there was a significant association between the training and performance of secondary school teachers. The teachers who received in-service training through QAED were found more effective in their performance. It is suggested that in-service training must be arranged for all the teachers to prepare skilled teachers to improve students? performance. To get maximum output from in service trainings, there should be proper monitoring system by higher authorities.
