Due to development of latest technologies in the areas of communication and computer networks, present businesses are moving to the digital world for effectiveness, convenience and security. One of the examples is in the area of medical applications, where traditional diagnosis is being replaced by e-diagnosis. This paradigm gave birth to number of applications in healthcare industry like teleconsulting, telesurgery and telediagnosis. All these applications require the exchange of medical images in digital format from one geographical location to another throughout the globe via a cheap and fast network such as Internet. However, digital form of medical image can easily be manipulated through image processing softwares. Insurance companies, hospitals as well as patients might want to modify the medical images for a number of reasons. The tampered images may be used for illegal purposes. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate how to protect a medical images, detect tampered images and recover the original image using the technique of Digital Watermarking. Watermarking tech- nology can be categorized into robust, fragile and semi-fragile watermarking, each serving for different purposes. In order to facilitate sharing and remote handling of medical images, we propose techniques to solve the problem of copyright protection and content authentication using robust and fragile watermarking respectively. In the first part of this dissertation, we design a fragile watermarking system for the exact authentication of medical images. The proposed system authenticates the computed tomography (CT) scan medical images of thorax area against different distortions. The system first enhances the embedding capacity of a CT scan image by isolating the actual lung parenchyma unlike classical watermarking techniques, which use logical square or ellipse for isolating region of interest (ROI). Secondly it embeds watermark only in region of non interest (RONI), thus not compromising the diagnosis value of medical image. The method utilizes the spatial domain watermarking and least significant bit (LSB) replacement method for embedding the watermark. Experimental results reveal that the proposed system detects both legitimate and illegitimate distortions. Robust watermarks are well suited for copyright protection because they stay intact with the image under various manipulations. In the second part of the dissertation, we investigate an approach of robust watermarking for protection of medical images which ensures the security of medical images against geomet- rical distortions. In the proposed method we firstly normalize the medical image using image moments in order to make it invariant against geometric transformations. Secondly, we select the salient regions in the normalized image based on feature points detected by Harris corner detector. Watermarking is performed in Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain of salient regions by adapting block based embedding. The scheme is completely blind, that it does not require the original image to detect the watermark. We thus address the issue of tolerating affine transformations in medical images that is hardly be found in existing schemes of medical image watermarking. In third part of the dissertation, we investigate the complete reversible watermarking system. The proposed method uses integer wavelet transform and companding technique which can embed and recover the secret information as well as can restore the image to its pristine state. The method takes advantage of block based watermarking and iterative optimization of threshold for companding, which avoids histogram pre and post-processing. Consequently, it reduces the associated overhead usually required in most of the reversible watermarking techniques. As a result, it keeps the distortion small between the marked and the original images. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing reversible data hiding schemes reported in the literature.

Introduction

In the Indo-Pak sub-continent, Sindh is the first of the zones where the advent of Islām was the earliest. Historically, the scholars here did a great work of intellect and research. In the year 270 A. H/883A. D, due to internal disturbance, so many small states came into being. [1]

            Out of these, the state of Manṣūrah was taken over by the Ḥubārī tribe. Muslim ruler ‘Abdallāh bin ‘Umar Ḥubārī of Manṣūrah had sent a scholar to Hindū Rājāh of Alvar on his request who presented the translation of the Qur’ān in his court. This incident narrated by the famous historian Buzurg Bin Shehr Yār has also been endorsed by renowned historians of the sub-continent. [2]But nothing with certainty can be said about the symmetrical order and the dictation of this translation, however, it is certain that the honor of translating the Qur’ān the first of all lies with Sindh. [3]

            In the era of Arghaun and Tarkhān, Makhdūm Nūḥ Hālāe’ (d:998 A. H/1589A. D) properly translated the Qur’ān in Persian which has become available in secured form despite the varying times. [4]

            This translation, with the efforts and research of ‘Allāma Muṣṭafā Qāsmī (d:1424A. H/2003A. D) has been published by Sindh Literary Board Ḥyderābād. This translation was compiled even earlier than the translation of famous researcher Shāh Walī Allāh(d:1176A. H/1762A. D). The goal of this investigation is to discover how Kamila Shamsie's book "Home Fire" has been misinterpreted and used about the masculinity crisis for identity and existence. This study explains how the artificial masculinity imposed by society and culture on the male characters in the novel is forced onto them, only for self-satisfaction. The purpose of the study is to highlight the fact that different cultures, particularly the dominant diasporic culture, have distinct beliefs about masculinity and femininity in terms of identity and outright denial. The author supports this by pointing out how these masculinities also repress women. Erikson's work on identity, which is being examined under psychological views and the restraint of other creatures, has an impact on this study. By integrating self-categorization with presumptions about the nature of intergroup relationships, social categorization depersonalizes perception, cognition, effect, and behavior in terms of relevant in-group or outgroup prototypes and explains particular instances of group behavior. Dynamics of Osrglp1 Gene During Fungal Exposure in Transgenic Potato

Germin like proteins (GLPs) are large group of related and ubiquitous plant proteins. These proteins are considered to be involved in most of the processes important for the development of plant and defense mechanism. Although multiple copies of this gene family have been reported in a number of species (wheat, barley, rice, soybean, mosses and liverwort), even then the up-regulated expression of GLP transgenes has demonstrated additional defense capabilities. Due to reported role of GLPs in conferring fungal resistance, there is a need to explore their antifungal activity. For this purpose potato was selected as experimental material. It is a vegetable crop and produces, on average, additional food energy and protein than cereals. Potato with immense nutritive value, large yield, and significant cash return to farmers, has become a major crop for both farmers and consumers in Pakistan. Potato is susceptible to many kinds of diseases, especially to fungal pathogens, therefore genetic engineering of potato for disease resistance is an important strategy study and apply disease resistance. GM technology can be an effective tool for crop improvement. The transgenic approach was pursued to introduce rice (Oryza sativa) germin like protein gene OsRGLP1 using two recombinant vectors pC:OsRGLP1 and pG:OsGLP1 via Agrobacterium mediated transformation. Confirmation of presence of gene was carried out by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). One-step reverse transcriptase PCR was used for transcriptional analysis and expression was quantified in real time in all PCR positive putative transgenic lines. Functional status of transgene was studied in selected high expression lines from two vectors. It was observed that OsRGLP1 possesses super oxide dismutase activity and it is heat resistant and is sensitive to H2O2. These characteristics make it a Fe like SOD. A high H2O2 level was detected in transgenic lines. Fungal assay with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. tuberosi showed xvi enhanced foliar resistance in transgenic lines in comparison to untransformed control plants. OsRGLP1 may be used as source for nonspecific fungal resistance in plants and the antioxidant activity of heat resistant SOD may be explored for abiotic stress tolerance.
