The present practice of teaching of English in Pakistan is based on memorization and rote - learning. The teaching of English language is done in the same manner as other subjects where the teacher provides the content and the students learn. The participation of students in the class is not considered to be essential in learning the language. In this study I presented the existing practice and my efforts to introduce ways, especially variety of questioning techniques to enhance students participation. Also interactive ways of teaching grammar that I introduced in the class are also described. The findings of my study suggest that asking a variety of questions increases students' interest in class participation and improves skills of reading.

مجید احمد تاثیرؔ (۱۹۱۲ء۔۱۹۸۶ء) کا اصل نام مجید احمد اورتاثیرؔ تخلص کرتے تھے۔ آپ سیالکوٹ میں پیدا ہوئے ۔ میٹرک مادرِ علمی علامہ اقبال سے پاس کیا۔ ۱۹۳۳ء میں امر تسر کے ایم اے اوکالج کے طالب علم بھی رہے۔ جہاں ان دنوں ڈاکٹر رشید جہاں اور میاں ڈاکٹر محمود الظفر اُستاد تھے۔ مجید تاثیرؔ امر تسر کی ادبی محفلوں میں شعر و شاعری کرتے رہے۔ فیضؔسے ان کے پرانے تعلقات تھے۔طب کی تعلیم کے لیے تاثیر طبیہ کالج دہلی چلے گئے۔ اس زمانے میں نظم کی طرف توجہ ہوئی اور جوش ملیح آبادی سے دوستی ہوئی۔سیالکوٹ میں تاثیر نے بڑے بڑے مشاعرے کروائے۔ جن میں جوشؔ اور جگرؔ جیسے شاعروں کو مدعو کیا گیا۔(۵۸۴)

لاہور آکر تاثیر نے کچھ عرصہ ملازمت بھی کی۔ آپ نے انار کلی میں ہمدرد مطب قائم کیا۔ جو ش ملیح آبادی جب بھی لاہور آتے تھے ان کے ہمراہ جو چند اصحاب موجود رہتے تھے۔ ان میں تاثیر بھی تھے جوش صاحب مجید تاثیر کی رباعیات کی بہت زیادہ تعریف کرتے تھے۔(۵۸۵)

اُن کا شعری مجموعہ ’’رباعیات تاثیر‘‘ الوقار پبلی کیشنز لاہور نے ۲۰۰۰ء میں شائعکیا۔ یہ مجموعہ کلام رباعیات ،رومانی نظموں اور غزلیات پر مشتمل ہے۔ اس مجموعے کے دو سو سات صفحات ہیں۔اس کتاب کے آغا ز میں ڈاکٹر وحید قریشی نے ’’پیشِ لفظ‘‘ احمد ندیم قاسمی نے تعارف’’مجید احمد تاثیر‘‘ ناہید سلمیٰ نے مضمون’’ تجھے اے زندگی لاؤں کہاں سے‘‘ ڈاکٹر سید عبداﷲ نے تعارف کتاب’’رباعیاتِ تاثیر ‘‘ ڈاکٹر عبادت بریلوی نے تعارف’’رباعیاتِ تاثیر‘‘ اور جوش ملیح آبادی نے ’’تعارف مجید تاثیر ‘‘پیش کیا ہے۔ جوش نے تاثیرؔ کے تعارف کے ساتھ ایک رباعی بھی لکھی ہے۔ جو درج ذیل ہے:

Impact of a Non-Dedicated U-Turn on Traffic

Non-dedicated U turn has a direct effect on road safety, capacity and congestion during the traffic flow. U turn can have significant supremacy on traffic flow and headway. Therefore to study the impact of non-dedicated u turns on traffic is the ultimate requirement of the current time. This is a microscopic traffic study in which the data from a U turn (33°59’48.2"N 71°27’30.2"E) on road leading to Hayatabad and Karkhano in Peshawar is evaluated in terms of headway, speed and flow rate of traffic. Factual data is presented which shows that the average time headway surges when the traffic is interfered by the U turning vehicles. The probability density functions and cumulative density functions fit to the datasets of headway are then evaluated by the techniques of anova analysis to determine which distribution is the most suitable one for the data. Distribution data specific with the interfering U turn was taken in a separate set and evaluated. The result obtained show that the Burr Distribution and Generalized Extreme Value Distribution are the optimum to illustrate the headway data of traffic being interfered by U turning vehicles. This ligitimize the utilization of various time headway distributions of vehicles being interfered by U turning for traffic modeling.

Translation as an Act of Manipulation: Kiernan's Translation of Iqbal The present research aims to explore the translated text as an incident or site of manipulative literature. Manipulation is reflected as an intention in Translation Studies. Translation Studies have been recognized as a flourishing and successful field of knowledge by scholars of linguistics, literary study, history, anthropology, psychology and the like. These fields contribute theoretically to Translation Studies. The researcher has selected translation/s of the indigenous text as Source Language text created by Doctor Muhammad Iqbal in Urdu rendered into English (as Target Language text) by Victor Gordon Kiernan. These literary translations in the poetic form as test cases illustrate the manipulation ideologies dictated by translation theory and/or translatology. The focus is on the linguistic elements that are partially translated and are left un-translated during the act of translation. Such linguistic items appear as borrowings, calque, modulation and adaptation. These linguistic elements serve as tools and become yardstick for manipulation analysis of the translated text. The analysis is brought about with the help of textual and critical discourse analysis of the sample poems. The translated text serves as a premise to draw attention to the apparent lacuna or breach in passing on the (original) meanings during the act of translation. The translation norms as well as the translator’s language are influential in dictating the meaning within a text. A host of indigenous translators who have also done the poetry of Iqbal in English have also been included to explore the aporias, if any, created by the foreign translator (Kiernan). As meaning in a language is always context-bound and situation relevant, there exist a linguistic distance between the source and target languages. Similarly, a cultural distance between the two language communities also exists. That is why, the central function of translation as a powerful shaping force in a socio-cultural political set up is highlighted. The act becomes manipulative yet creative. Manipulation cannot be taken as a bias to condemn the translated literature. It comes up as the evolution of creation of new meanings in distant linguistic and cultural set ups.
