This study explored the influence on teachers' beliefs about the nature, learning, and teaching of science during a Secondary Science Visiting Teacher Program (VTP). The multiple case study design involved four Visiting Teachers (VTs) from different geographical sites and from different educational sectors i.e. Government and AKES, as the study participants. The Secondary Science VTP offered by the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) was an eight-week in-service professional development program for secondary science teachers which exposed the VTs to contemporary methods of teaching and learning in science. During the program, course participants were, in particular, introduced to a highly interactive approach to learning and teaching science. For the data collection, a variety of methods were used consisting of interviews, observations, post-lesson discussions, informal conversations, and document analysis. The research participants' beliefs were elicited before and during the later stage of the program using the earlier mentioned methods. It was found that all four VTs began the program holding a highly positivist view about the nature of science and regarded science largely as a body of knowledge comprised of facts and truths. No apparent or measurable change in their views about the nature of science was found as a consequence of having participated in the program. The study found that, although the VTs entered the program holding traditional beliefs about the learning and teaching of science, there was evidence of a noticeable shift in the respondents' beliefs from a transmission mode to one which was more constructivist in nature. That is, at the end of the program, the study participants viewed learning as a more active process whereby learners construct their own personal knowledge about science. Further, the program incorporated many strategies to facilitate conceptual change and appeared successful in challenging the VTs' incoming beliefs about the learning and the teaching of science. The study is seen to hold considerable implication for teacher education in other subject areas. Several recommendations for further research are presented in light of the study findings.

Ijtihad As a Legislative Function: Role of Ijtihad, Ifta and Taqleed in Legislative Process

In Islamic legislation Ijtihad plays an important role and has central position in the whole process. Demands of life change day by day thus it become necessary to take on the structural review of Islamic laws keeping in mind the spirit and discipline of Islamic. Ijtihad thus play as a perfect tool for legislation. Regarding fatawas the jurists followed the methodologies of companions, tabieen, and taba Tabaeen. In cases in which they did not find any legal opinion of their teachers related to a specific problem they themselves tried to find out the solution for that problem from the relevant Texts and formulate their own fatawa. In Pakistan the Judiciary that performs the task of interpretation for law-making, Majlis-e-Shura and various Ulama are exercising the job of Ifta. The Council of Islamic Ideology is the official legislative body of fatawa. Taqleed is also an acceptable mode of legislation whose proofs are evident from Quran and Sunnah. It has been used as a source of legislation in Pakistan as well. In constitution of Pakistan article 189 and 201 are related to Taqlid. Article 189 and 201 makes the decisions of Supreme Court binding on all courts and the High court judgments binding on all subordinate courts. Thus the legislative process in Islam employs the methods of Ijtihad, Ifta and Taqlid as a perfect tool of legislation.

Polyimide/silica (PI/silica) and poly(hydroxyl imide)/silica (PHI/silica) nanocomposites containing pure as well as organically modified silica network structures have been prepared through the sol-gel process from solution mixtures of poly(amic acid) (PAA) and alkoxysilanes. Two types of PAAs were employed. The first was obtained from the reaction of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with oxydianiline (ODA) in dimethylacetamide as a solvent. The second was prepared from the reaction of PMDA with a mixture of 3,3′- diamino-4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl and ODA. The hybrid films obtained by solvent elution technique were thermally cured to carry out the imidization process and the silica network formation. The effect of compatibility enhancement achieved through the modification of polymer backbone as well as through the use of non-silane and silane-terminated imide coupling oligomers on structure and properties of hybrids was studied and compared with the systems where reinforcement of the matrix was achieved using pure silica. The presence of pendant hydroxyl groups on polymer backbone played an important role in dictating the morphology of the PHI/silica hybrids. A model namely “Retain and React” based on two-step process has been proposed to explain the formation of polymer- modified silica clusters composed of co-continuous nano-domains with diffused boundaries as the previously proposed models failed to explain the observed morphology. The introduction of coupling oligomers in hybrid systems impeded the agglomeration of nano- sized silica domains and promoted the formation of novel fibril structures connecting the organic and inorganic phases together. Significant reduction in the roughness of the surfaces in the hybrid materials having modified matrix and silica networks has also been attributed to effect of enhanced coupling. A large shift in the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the hybrid material to higher temperatures confirmed the restricted segmental motion of polymer backbone due to increased interfacial interaction. The high surface-area of the interconnected silica domains stabilized the materials and shifted the decomposition profiles to higher temperatures by providing barriers to heat and mass transport in the hybrid material and thus slowing down the diffusion of oxygen in the matrix. The enhanced polarity coupled with organically modified silica offer an opportunity for improving Tg, reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion and increasing thermal-oxidative stability of polyimide/silica hybrids. The co-continuous and interpenetrating network structure thus produced also improves mechanical properties.
