Motivation plays a particularly critical role in English as a foreign language (EFL) position where learners are separated logistically and psychologically from the target culture of English language. Consequently, when the teacher uses different activities and strategies to motivate the students, s/he can influence the students' level of motivation; so that it will eventually affect the extent to which the students can learn a language (Gardner, 1997). In this study -a small scale action research- the teacher researcher aimed to improve her own capabilities and skills by using different strategies to motivate students to learn English language in better way. Within a framework of action research, the study was conducted within two cycles in a private primary school in Karachi, Pakistan. The main research participants were the teacher researcher and five selected students, along with the class teacher acting as a critical friend. The process of action research started with the teacher researcher studying her own, the students' and class teacher's views and practices of using different motivational strategies. The whole school context was also studied in order to gain an understanding of what was going on. The researcher followed the steps of planning, implementation, observation, and reflections. Therefore, data were collected through using observation, pre- and post- semi-structured interviews, reflective journals and document analysis. The ongoing analysis was maintained side by side with data collection. The data reveal that using interesting and challenging activities in the class serve as purposeful tools to motivate the students in order to find learning English interesting and meaningful. The findings show that some students became intrinsically motivated to learn, whereas some others need external motives to learn better. Findings and key learning include the researcher's learning as a teacher and as an action researcher. The study also reports some possible strategies for the teachers which may enable them to motivate their students to learn English language. Based on the findings, some implications have also been put forward, along with the general conclusion of the study.

A Protective Effect of Commercial Green Tea on Ibuprofen Induced Changes in Renal Function Tests of Adult Rats

Background: Nephrotoxicity of ibuprofen is a growing international public health problem in the wake of excessive use of the drug for the treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases in both adults and pediatric patients. Objectives: To present an overview of the protective effect of the green tea on ibuprofen-induced changes in the biochemical markers of the adult rat kidneys. Methods: It is an experimental study conducted in the department of Anatomy, Army Medical College Rawalpindi. The investigation was led on 30 male and non-pregnant female Sprague Dawley rodents of 9-11 weeks old enough and going in weight from 200-330 gm. The animals were divided into three groups consisting of 10 animals each; group A served as control, each animal in group B was given ibuprofen at a dose of 120 mg/kg/day and each animal in group C was given both green tea at a dose of 1ml/100g/day and Ibuprofen 120mg/kg body weight for a period of 9 weeks. Ibuprofen manufactured by Abbot Laboratories (Pvt.) Limited was utilized. Green tea was obtained from local market. Data was collected at the end of experimental period and was analyzed using SPSS version 22. One Way ANOVA was exerted, afterwards by post-hoc Tukey test to find out intergroup differences for quantitative variables. The results were depicted as mean ± standard deviation (mean ± SD). A p value < 0.05 was believed significant. Results: Green tea administration had a significantly favorable effect on serum urea (mg/dl) (Group A=21.9 ± 2.8, Group B=93.2 ± 3.9, Group C=36.4± 3.0; p<0.001) and serum creatinine (mg/dl) (Group A=0.9 ± 0.22, Group B=2.4± 0.52, Group C=0.97 ± 0.3; p<0.001). Conclusions: Green tea had ameliorative effects on the ibuprofen-induced changes in the biochemical markers of the adult rat kidneys.

Resolvability in Wheel Related Graphs and Nanostructures

Resolvability in graphs has appeared in numerous applications of graph theory, e.g. in pattern recognition, image processing, robot navigation in networks, computer sciences, combinatorial optimization, mastermind games, coin-weighing problems, etc. It is well known fact that computing the metric dimension for an arbitrary graph is an NP-complete problem. Therefore, a lot of research has been done in order to compute the metric dimension of several classes of graphs. Apart from calculating the metric dimension of graphs, it is natural to ask for the characterization of graph families with respect to the nature of their metric dimension. In this thesis, we study two important parameters of resolvability, namely the metric dimension and partition dimension. Partition dimension is a natural generalization of metric dimension as well as a standard graph decomposition problem where we require that distance code of each vertex in a partition set is distinct with respect to the other partition sets. The main objective of this thesis is to study the resolving properties of wheel related graphs, certain nanostructures and to characterize these classes of graphs with respect to the nature of their metric dimension. We prove that certain wheel related graphs and convex polytopes generated by wheel related graphs have unbounded metric dimension and an exact value of their metric dimension is determined in most of the cases. We also study the metric dimension and partition dimension of 2-dimensional lattices of certain nanotubes generated by the tiling of the plane and prove that these 2-dimensional lattices of nanotubes have discrepancies between their metric dimension and partition dimension. We also compute the exact value of metric dimension for an infinite class of generalized Petersen networks denoted by P(n; 3) by giving answer to an open problem raised by Imran et al. in 2014, which complete the study of metric dimension for the class of generalized Petersen networks P(n; 3).
