Background: The heart size has traditionally been assessed using absolute reference weights. But the heart weight (HW) has been shown to depend on one’s body size hence a better measure is the ratio of the HW to the body weight (BW) – the HW-BW coefficient. Initially noted to be 0.43% and 0.40% in males and females respectively, recent studies have shown an increase of up to 0.51%. Objective: To determine the HW-BW coefficient in Kenyans aged 14 years and above. Methods: One hundred and four deceased Kenyans aged 14 years and above, with no heart or chronic lung disease, were recruited into the prospective cross-sectional study. Their ages, body lengths (BLs), BW and HW were recorded. Their body mass indices (BMI) and body surface areas (BSA) were also calculated. Results: There were 88 males and 16 females, all of African descent. Males had larger HW. The HW-BW ratio was 0.48% and 0.42% in males and females respectively. The difference in the value between the sexes was statistically significant. Among the males, there was a significant positive correlation between HW and all body indices as well as with age. Among the females, there was a significant positive correlation between HW and BSA and between HW and age. Recently generated HW-vs-BW and HW-vs-BSA charts from the UK were found unsuitable for the Kenyan context. Conclusions: The Kenyan HW-BW coefficient is lower than that recently documented in other parts of the world. Males have a larger coefficient than females. The HW is related to both size and age of an individual.

Mufti Muhammad Shafi' was a great spiritual leader, Pakistan's grand mufti and a renowned Islamic scholar as well. He served in different fields with his knowledge, research and writings. He translated and wrote the interpretation of the Holy Qur’ān, he had keen grasp on Fiqh, Hadith and other religious affairs. Thousands of fatwas had been issued by him and he built a well known Islamic university named ‘Jamia Darul uloom Karachi.’ He participated in politics as well for the national cause and struggled too much for the Islamic contribution in the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This research paper is about his efforts that he made for the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him). He wrote several books on Seerat-e-Nabawi, he defended Khatm-e-Nubuwwat and fought against Qadyaniyyat. This report has the abstract frame on specific grounds regarding Sīrah, Sunnah and teachings of Holy Prophet. It will portray a very brief description on Mufti Shafi's services in Sīrah's aspect.

Moleclar and Biochemical Studies of Rhizobial Strains to Improve Growth and Yield of Legumes

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are the soil and plant associated bacteria that promote growth and yield of plant by various mechanisms. PGPR are important in agriculture as it has replaced the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other supplements. Rhizosphere microorganisms produce the substances that promote growth in large quantities that affect plant’s morphology indirectly. In the proposed study, root nodulating bacteria were isolated from chickpea and pea. Their nodulation activity, biofilm formation, root colonization were observed and characterized for solubilization of phosphate, production of indole acetic acid and fixation of nitrogen. Potential root nodulating bacteria were identified using 16S rRNA, ITS and nodC gene sequence analysis. AHLs were detected using thin layer chromatography. Potential root nodulating bacteria were evaluated to enhance yield and growth of chickpea and pea. All the strains were analyzed for growth promotion abilities in growth chamber experiment. Soil analysis was done before pot experiment. Strains were evaluated for their improvement in yield and growth of chickpea and peas. Rhizobium bangladeshense was isolated from pea nodules for the first time. Overall Mesorhizobium ciceri strain CM1 and CM2 showed the best results on chickpea as compared to control. It was confirmed for the first time that Rhizobium bangladeshense nodulates pea. Rhizobium bagladeshense PM3 and Rhizobium leguminosarum strains PM1 showed the best results on peas. Co-inoculation with Rhizobium bangladeshense PM3 and Rhizobium leguminosarum PM2 strain showed the best result on peas as compared to single inoculation.
