Takaful is an Islamic way of doing insurance: It proved its viability after several Fatwas were issued by Ulama and Fiqh academies in its favour. Presently, over 100 Takaful and Re-takaful companies as well as Takaful windows under conventional insurance are operating across the world. Enhanced financial performance of selected Takaful companies has shown the growing interest in Takaful business across the world. Insurance comparison in Muslim and advanced countries as well as in the South Asian region has identified low literacy, low GDP per capita and low GDI value as the probable causes of low insurance penetration in Pakistan. Geographical spread of Takaful business and estimated future potential together with the increasing trend of insurance business indicated that potential for Takaful business exists in the country. It urges the policy makers to pay attention to global indicators that might become potential contributors to Takaful business. The study emphasizes that strengthened regulatory standards, with Shari'ah compliance mechanism playing a central role, are essential to transform conventional insurance system and exploit the existing business potential. To further analyze which of the Takaful standards are significantly affecting Takaful practices, a survey of Takaful operators in the country indicated that reporting standards and internal controls have low level of observance in Pakistan. The survey of 150 life insurance customers revealed that majority of the respondents is unaware of Takaful concept. Level of Takaful awareness was found to be significantly associated with the education of the customers, their perceptions about Takaful and their intentions to shift to Takaful Company. Education was found to be the single important factor affecting monthly income of the respondents, their state of mind and hence their awareness about Takaful. The study identifies effective regulatory framework a critical factor for the success of Takaful business in Pakistan. A greater focus on promotion of Takaful and governance issues along with strengthened role of SECP as a regulatory authority is likely to contribute for further growth of Takaful industry in Pakistan.

Awareness and Accessibility of Right to Information Act: A Comparative Study of Minorities within Pakistan and India

Right to Information (RTI) has become one of the major laws to strengthen the democracy of a country. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the awareness and accessibility of RTI for minorities in Pakistan and India. In this regard, a survey questionnaire was distributed to the total of 50 Pakistani Hindus and 50 Indian Muslims under snowball sampling method. The findings were analyzed with the help of independent-samples t-test on SPSS. Findings indicate Pakistani Hindus have only 12% awareness and right to access information as compare to Indian Muslims. For the future studies, there is a need to develop awareness of Right to Information specially in Pakistan in order to improve accountability and transparency in the structure of government.

Determination of Agro-Management Practices for Wheat Triticum Aestivum L. Sown in Rice-Wheat Cropping System

Most of the farmers of irrigated areas cultivate their fields with traditional tillage practices which increase the cost of production as well as delaying sowing which has adverse effects on crop growth and yield. In addition towards tillage, straw managing is a key factor for better crop growth and yield. Two field trials were conducted to estimate the “Crop residual management techniques with different tillage practices in a rice-wheat cropping system” at the Post Graduate Agricultural Research Station (PARS), University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 2007-08 and 2008-09. Both the experiments were laid out on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with split plot arrangement using four replications, in a net plot size of 10 m x 20 m. In the first experiment three tillage systems (conventional tillage, minimum tillage and zero tillage) were used in sub plots and straw management (removal of rice straw and burning of rice straw) in main plot was applied. Tillage systems significantly influenced soil physical properties, growth and yield characteristics as well as wheat yield. Reducing tillage improved soil structure and increased soil bulk density which led to higher crop yield. Happy seeder plots produced higher yield and yield components in comparison with other tillage systems. Wheat yield with happy seeder plots were 18% and 15 % higher than minimum and conventionally tilled plots respectively. Generally, differences between removal of rice straw and burning of rice straw were more pronounced; removal of rice straw had positive influence on growth, yield components, yield and grain quality. Increased grain weight per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield were recorded with burning of rice straw. Wheat yield with removal of rice straw was 17.5% and 14.55% higher than burning of rice straw respectively. The happy seeder yield was 5.2 t/ ha -1 which was higher in comparison with other tillage practices. Zero tillage showed positive association with protein contents but negative association with carbohydrate contents. Zero tillage was found best among all other tillage practices in rice-wheat cropping system of Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan.
