In different organs of the fish a few heavy metals were measured in some fishes Cirrhiunus reba, Channa marulius and Rita rita captured at Minchanabad Town in River Sutlej. The water and sediment samples were collected and analysed for metal concentration. With the help of pure Nitric acid all the samples were digested and only for gills perchloric acid (4:1) was used at 100 and reading was taken through spectrophotometer. The blood samples were collected from live fish through cardiac puncture and caudal vein. To check the effects of heavy metals, the haematological parameters were also used. The damage of DNA was evaluated through micronucleus test of blood erythrocytes. Similarly physiochemical parameters of water were also tested to check the level of nitrates, dissolved gases and pH results revealed that temperature recorded was 14.18 ? 2.09 ?C during winter and 24.15 ? 6.04?C in summer season. The average pH value was 8.01 ? 0.29 and 7.59 ? 0.49 during winter and summer seasons respectively. Total hardness was 115.20?10.43 mg/L in winter and 33.34?26.45 mg/L during summer. Dissolved Oxygen was 7.52 ? 1.04 and 7.15 ? 0.90 during winter and summer season. Mean concentration of heavy metals were significantly higher in winter season. Accumulation of Ni in sediments of centre of river was 32.4?0.65 ?g/g and 35.49?0.64 ?g/g along bank of the river. Level of Fe was 1847?2.65 ?g/g in main stream while 1818.3?2.52 ?g/g near bank. The Cd concentration was 0.0023?0.001 ?g g-1 in centre and 0.0018?0.001 ?g/g along banks. Copper were 54.37?0.82 ?g/g in main stream sediments and 35.18?1.75 ?g/g in sediments of banks. Chromium was 47.27?0.86 ?g/g in centreand37.1?1.06 ?g/g near bank in winter season. Lead was accumulated significantly higher in sediments with concentration of 93.11?0.16 in centre and 75.06?0.09 ?g/g along banks of river. A total of three fish species (Cirrhinus reba,Channa marulius and Rita rita) were also evaluated for bioaccumulation level of heavy metal concentrations Mean concentrations and standard deviations were applied for results for samples of during winter and summer season which were different statistically in all test organs and also in fish species.

An Analysis of Prisons’ Staff Role in the Reintegration of the Prisoners

The central theme of this research is to explore the effectiveness of prisons staff in the reintegration of the prisoners with specific focus on Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (Pakistan) jails. Mixed method was adopted to carry out the study.  Seven high-profile jails within Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, one jail each, in all the seven administrative divisions, were purposively selected.  Of all 277 respondents, 250 comprised of jail inmates (under trial and convicted adults and juveniles male prisoners) were randomly selected within the seven jails of the province and interviewed through semi-structured questionnaire.  The remaining 27 respondents, purposively selected and interviewed through interview-guide included judges, lawyers, jail officials, human right activists and ex-prisoners.  Further, One focus group discussion was arranged to gain more deep insight into the phenomenon in question. Concurrent triangulation strategy was adopted for the collection and analysis of data.       It was found that prison staff in Pakistan is characterized by lack of will and skill to transform prisons into correction institutions. Their involvement in torturing the inmates, providing them proscribed stuff, sexual assaults on the prisoners, taking bribery for extending legal and illegal favors etc is deeply-seated within the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa prisons. Providing best trainings to the prisons’ staff considering modern-day needs, their salaries increase along with sound service structure, meritorious selection, transfer and up-gradation of the prisons’ employees, recruitment of the needed staff to bridge the staff-inmate huge gape and ensuring the effective accountability system of prisons are the suggested measures to overcome the problem at hand.

Constructing Pathways to Translation: A Study in Translation Pedagogy and Process [from English into Urdu and Vice Versa]

The study touches upon all the major areas of Translation, with special emphasis on Pedagogy (theories and methods), which is not much known and applied by translators, and where controversies still abound. The research analyses and explores all the theoretical and practical aspects involved in the translation process and various approaches to verge on the text to be translated, both in English and Urdu. The framework for translation has been worked out from multiple and diverse theories and models of translation and text linguistics propounded by various theorists. It has been devised in a linear order, beginning from text types, text descriptions, text linguistics and processing, and ending with text production as translation. The most crucial issue of Equivalence in translation has been analysed and applied, and various strategies, procedures and tactical tools for translation have been suggested. The research also unveils the current state of Urdu translation pedagogy and process in Pakistan, and suggests ways for its improvement in the light of the suggested theoretical matrix. The devised exhaustive pedagogic framework is later applied to the content analysis of four novels and the Questionnaire Survey, so that readers can see them in operation and at the same time help to confirm the reliability and validity of the devised theoretical framework and the recommended strategies for translation. The research endeavours to suggest a model translation curriculum, so as to lay down the foundation of Translation Studies as a discipline at the post-graduate level in all the public sector universities in Pakistan, in general and the International Islamic University, Islamabad, in particular. This is one of the pioneering work in Pakistan’s academia.
